You don’t even have to be artistic or have any prior experience! For many years I’ve specialized in doing Custom Printing for Schools, Churches, Class Reunions and Weddings. All of them buy tons of Custom Printed Souvenirs, Fund-Raisers and Gifts. I used this machine to design and create the Custom Art they wanted. I would do things such as combine their School Mascot, Logo, Picture, etc. with any Lettering they wanted. For example, for Class Reunions I would create Artwork that included their School’s Mascot along with their School’s Name and Date of their Class Reunion. This Artwork would then be printed onto T-shirts, Sweats, Hats, Coffee Cups, Beer Mugs or whatever they wanted. They would sell these items as Fund-Raisers or they would give them away as Souvenirs and Gifts. I would also create Artwork for Schools, Churches, Weddings, Class Reunions, etc. and they would have that Artwork printed onto all kinds of different items, such as T-shirts, Sweats, Nylon Jackets, Hats, Bumper Stickers, Banners, Signs, Coffee Cups, Beer Mugs, Shot Glasses, Frisbees, etc. The money-making potential is unlimited!

This is a very profitable business that you can run out of your garage, basement, spare bedroom or small building. I ran the business out of my Condominium’s basement for over 10 years. When I first started my "Photography, Custom Printing and Direct-Mail" business back in 1983, there were only a couple of ways for me to advertise my products and services ... the Yellow Pages and Newspaper Ads. Both of them cost a lot of money, and sadly, they weren't very effective. I quickly realized that I needed to find a less expensive way to get my advertising out to the people that would buy my products and services. After thinking about it for a while, I realized that all people have one thing in common ... they all read their mail! It was with that thought in mind that I discovered that the best way for me to get my advertising out to my potential customers was to direct-mail them an inexpensive color post-card that included a picture of my products and services.
So, my very first advertising campaign was a simple color post-card that I mailed to all of the businesses in my area. The post-card included a picture of me holding my camera, standing next to a large display board that was filled with numerous samples of post-cards, catalog sheets and brochures in different sizes and shapes. The message on the card was simple. It read: "Do you need an inexpensive way to advertise your Product or Service? I'm a One-Stop Shop that does it all ... including the Photography, the Custom-Printing of your Color Post-Card, Catalog or Brochure. Plus, I can even provide you with a mailing list so that I can label, stamp and mail your Post-Card to your Customers! I do it ALL!"
My first customers were mostly Real Estate Agents (so I'd take a picture of them next to a "SOLD" sign in front of a house), Car Dealerships, the Service Sector (such as Heating & Cooling Companies, Painters, etc.), Politicians (Lawyers running for Judge, etc.). What my customers didn't know was that I was only doing the Photography and the Labeling, and that I was “jobbing” out (and marking up) all of the other work to others. I was running the entire business out of the basement of my condominium and the only equipment I had was a camera, a computer and this mail-labeling machine!!!
SHOW ME THE MONEY! Well, let's add it all up. First, I charge to take the Photograph of their Product or Service (It’s easy! I’ll show you how to do that). Second, I charge for the design and layout of their message on their Post-Card (that's where the computer is used). Third, I mark-up the wholesale price of the Postcards and make a nice profit. Forth, I markup the wholesale price of the Mailing List and I make another nice profit. Fifth, I charge to apply the mailing labels (the machine applies 7500 labels per hour, which means I can apply 60,000 labels in just an 8 hour day!). And Sixth, I mark-up the price the post-office charges for bulk-rate postage. Add it all up, and it's a lot of money for very little work. This machine automatically cuts and applies computer-generated address labels (in one, three, four or five-up formats ranging in size from only 2.6 inches up to 4.5 inches in length) onto post-cards, catalogs and envelopes (ranging in size from as small as 3-1/4 by 5-1/2 inches up to 13 by 14 inches in size and up to 1/2 inch thick). As you can see from the pictures, the Machines is in excellent condition! VERSATILE VACUUM-FEED SYSTEM: Among the many advantages of the Mod VI is it’s unique Vacuum-Feed system, which handles a remarkable variety of documents at high speed - and with unparalleled reliability. The Vacuum-Feed System assures reliable feeding and label placement, every time. Adjustable side-guides regulate the stacking of documents, and a special feed-assist pusher keeps heavy items moving smoothly. After addressing the documents, the Mod VI stacks them in a receiving tray.
CONVENIENT CONTROLS: The Mod VI features an easy-to-use Control Panel complete with a Power On/Off Switch, Start Switch, Vacuum Set-up Control, Label Placement Hand-wheel and a Counter to record the number of pieces labeled.
EASY LABEL LOADING: The Mod VI loads almost as easily as a typewriter. All necessary adjustments can be made quickly and conveniently. The transparent shatterproof Safety Cover provides a clear view of the labels as they are fed. The process they use to Print T-Shirts is called "Screen-Printing" because they print the ink through a screen. Custom Printers also screen print Sweats, Hats, Jackets, Coffee Cups plus thousands more products. Graphic Arts is the process they use to make the Screen. First, artwork (such as lettering) is done on a computer, then the artwork is enlarged and "photographed" onto sheets of film using a Graphic Arts Camera. Next, the sheet of film is used to make the screen so that ink can be squeezed through onto the T-shirt, coffee cup, etc. Now, because of the bad economy, there are literally thousands of small screen-printing businesses that are being started up in people's garages and basements. A lot of them are printing T-shirts, Sweat-shirts and hats for local high schools and colleges. All you need is a room with electricity and running water! Back in the old days before color photography, Black & White was the only printing that was available. Now, it’s almost impossible to find a lab that prints Black & White, therefore the demand has gone way up.
Many people love Black & White Photography. It has a look and style about it that Color fails to capture. Black and White Prints are extremely popular to use on walls as art, and the bigger the print the better! Sadly, digital printers don't do a very good job of printing Black & White Prints. Even though computer printers can print Black & White, most people don’t like the results because the Blacks aren’t black enough, and the Whites aren’t white enough. Only Black & White printed in a darkroom can achieve those spectacular results!
Nothing yet has replaced the Black & White Darkroom, which is where the great Photographers (like Ansell Adams) did their magic. Sadly, Black & White Darkrooms are almost extinct because they've stop making enlargers, so the Art of hand-printing Black & White Prints is quickly becoming a lost art. But, here is the good news! There has been a resurgence of demand for large hand-printed Black & White Prints because people and businesses are using the Prints as artwork in homes & offices all around the world.
Both Amateur and Professional Photographers are constantly looking for a Photo- Lab that will develop and print their Black & White film.
